A single shot captured 75km south of Antofagasta, Chile, shows the magnificent Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) above the mountains of Atacama Desert, while the sky was full of a redish airglow bands, also known as atmospheric gravity waves. The LMC is the most massive satellite galaxy of our own Milky Way. It was named Magellanic, regarding the 16th century Portuguese navigator Fernão de Magalhães.

A vertical panorama of single frames features the core of our home galaxy, the Milky Way, full of bright emission nebulae visible in red/violet hues. Located high in the sky at this time of the year in the Southern Hemisphere, was framed above my hotel´s “hut” with a lovely view to an incredible starry sky, between the branches of some trees from a small village in Atacama Desert, called San Pedro de Atacama, in Chile. For those like me that are based in the Northern Hemisphere, a sky like that seems to be inverted, although, the bright light of Jupiter in the top center, helped to recognize the Dark River, dark absorption nebulas that extends from the central band of Milky Way, connecting the Pipe Nebula to the colourful region near bright star Antares, Rho Ophiuchi.

On an assignment for @esoastronomy in 2015, the photo reveals a panoramic view from VISTA telescope to the top of Cerro Paranal (at left) where it is located the VLT platform. In the right side we can see the Milky Way trying to show up behind a dark band of clouds, also covering the Moonset. The Very Large Telescope (VLT) is a telescope operated by the ESO – European Southern Observatory on Cerro Paranal in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. The VLT is the world’s most advanced optical instrument, consisting of four Unit Telescopes with main mirrors of 8.2m diameter, which are generally used separately but can be used together to achieve very high angular resolution. The four separate optical telescopes are known as Antu, Kueyen, Melipal and Yepun, which are all words for astronomical objects in the Mapuche language, with optical elements that can combine them into an astronomical interferometer (VLTI), which is used to resolve small objects. The interferometer is complemented by four movable Auxiliary Telescopes (ATs) of 1.8 m aperture.

Following the galactic core of our Galaxy, a short time lapse sequence shows in background, the motion of Milky Way over San Pedro de Atacama. This was my hotel’s view, located in the outer limit of the village. Lights from the hotel were still illuminating the branches from those trees in the foreground. This sequence was captured on my first night during my long 2019 trip to Atacama Desert in Chile, with my lovely mate @apolonia_rodrigues

Back in 2015, a fish-eye “full dome” view of La Palma shows the Milky Way crossing the entire sky while the Green Laser from William Herschel Telescope (WHT) is pointed to the Zenith. In the opposite direction, is visible the dome of Isaac Newton Telescope (INT). The image was captured in the rocky mountain of Roque de Los Muchachos, in La Palma Canary island. The CANARY laser guide star, is in use at the WHT during a few nights per semester, so this was a rare opportunity to capture it.

A twilight of a “double” moonrise reflected in a puddle of acid water from Achada do Gamo, in São Domingos Mine. Located in Baixo Alentejo, about 240 km from Lisbon, in the municipality of Mértola, recently joined the Dark Sky® Alqueva Route for the great quality of the night sky. The São Domingos mining area is part of the Iberian Pyrite Range and is a decisive source of basic metals (S, Zn, Pb, Sn, Ag, Au, Fe, Co, Cd, etc.) and other elements such as sulfur (S). The pyritic deposit of São Domingos (St. Dominic) was explored in various historical periods, namely: for several centuries of the first millennium BC (Eastern period), during the period between 14 BC and 395 AD (Roman period), during the Islamic period and during the modern period that was initiated in 1858 for the extraction of copper, gold and silver and was maintained until 1966.

In the foreground we can see the MAGIC I telescope (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov Telescopes) in front of a dragged Milky Way, due to the startrail sequence with many colorful stars mirrored in its surface of 236 m2. MAGIC is a system of two Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes situated at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma, one of the Canary Islands, at about 2200 m above sea level. MAGIC detects particle showers released by gamma rays, using the Cherenkov radiation, i.e., faint light radiated by the charged particles in the showers. With a diameter of 17 meters and 236 m2 reflective surface, it was the largest in the world before the construction of H.E.S.S. II. MAGIC is not only huge, but also pioneers a number of technical developments that had never been applied to Cherenkov telescopes before. The mirror is extremely light and can be moved to any position in the sky in less than thirty seconds. It is made up of 270 individual mirror panels that can be independently focussed using an active mirror control system equipped with lasers.

Created by glacier activity around 10000 years ago, Niagara Falls is one the of the World’s Natural Wonders. Located on the border of Ontario, Canada and New York State, USA, Niagara Falls are made up of 3 waterfalls, the American Falls, the Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe Falls. The 3 waterfalls combined, is producing the highest flow rate of any waterfall on Earth. The image shows a waxing gibbous moon above American Falls. On this day 20 July, but 50 years ago and on board of Apollo 11 mission, two Nasa Astronauts were making “a small step for man, but a giant leap for mankind”. After successfully landing, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were prepared to make the first walk ever, on the surface of “another world”, the Moon. This lunar panoramic landscape scene, could be the view from a spaceship flying over the moon, although, it was captured here on Earth from inside the Official Observatory of @darkskyalqueva, in Cumeada, Portugal. Showing a lot of interesting features from the south pole of the moon, we can highlight at the right center of the photo, Longomontanus crater with 145.5km and above it, near the terminator, an even big crater, Clavius, with 230.8km in diameter.

A brand new starlight destination has just born in center of Portugal. Dark Sky Schist Villages (Dark Sky Aldeias do Xisto) is now a Starlight Tourist Destination and has joined @darkskyalqueva , the first Starlight Tourist Destination in the world, being awarded in 2019 with a “Tourism Oscar” from World Travel Awards, as Europe´s Responsible Tourism Award 2019. With the Heart located in the municipality of Pampilhosa da Serra, the region has natural conditions to promote the contemplation of the firmament that stands before our eyes, in a deep sea dotted with stars, galaxies, planets and distant nebulae, which it translates into more than a pleasant visual experience, scientific or poetic, because it refers us to our imaginary from the child…to that magical place where all dreams are possible to attain and the genuine purity of simplicity, recognizes in the starry sky an intangible heritage without limits or borders of any creed, politics or religion. Through the silence of the night, natural moments of inner reflection make us more easily aware of the greatness of the universe around us, and the importance of taking care of our own planet Earth. The image reveals a lovely summer scene where the arch of Milky Way is shinning bright above Pampilhosa da Serra, in the heart of Dark Sky Aldeias do Xisto.

Another view of the Total Solar Eclipse from Chile, this time with a scene revealing an appearance more close to what eyes can experience during Totality. The image shows the dark moon disc and the light from outer and the inner corona, which reveals fine structures and curved lines by the strong magnetic fields. The image above is a result of a series of shots taken with different exposures over the course of 2 minutes and combined together to reveal a dramatic high dynamic range. The sequence was captured in Lambert, 30km northeast of La Serena, Chile, using a Nikon D850 with a 600mm lens and a Star Adventure portable mount.

One of the most beautiful things about viewing and photographing a total solar eclipse, is the light from the inner corona which reveals fine structures and curved lines by the strong magnetic fields, as well as the faint white light that extends far out into space, known as the Sun´s outer corona. On 2nd July, 2019, thousands of people located in some parts of Chile and Argentina had the incredible opportunity to witness the unique and unforgettable moment when the Moon itself completely blocks the sun´s disc showing also some prominences visible around the limb and a phenomenon known as the Moon Earthshine, even not being visible with our naked eyes during an eclipse due to the huge differnce of light, is the reflected light from our planet Earth that illuminates with a faint light, the moon´s dark disc and it can be revealed during a photographic long exposure. Another view from the Total Solar Eclipse. When Totality is reached, the atmosphere features a “U” shape due to the low position regarding the horizon. This 8mm circular fish-eye view was captured in Lambert, 30km northeast of La Serena, Chile.

Another view of the Eclipse that me and @apolonia_rodrigues had together, when the Moon itself completely blocks the sun´s disc. It was one of the most beautiful moments we have witnessed. The artistic power of Nature is incredible 💛💫🌖😍 and the feeling and atmosphere surrounding is something....really special!! The photo was captured with a 105mm lens in Lambert, 30km northeast of La Serena, Chile. Hope you like it!
